Arthur Segal (1875-1944) was a Romanian-German painter and graphic artist who was one of the most influential artists of the avant-garde. He was a co-founder of the expressionist artists' group "Der Sturm" and also took part in the "Berlin Secession". Segal experimented with various styles, from Impressionism to Expressionism and New Objectivity, and was known for his colour contrasts and geometric compositions. During the First World War, he developed the technique of the "mirror image", in which he painted pictures in symmetrical pairs. Due to his Jewish origins, he fled into exile in England in the 1930s to escape National Socialism, where he lived until his death.
