The Antonov An-225 "Mriya" is a former cargo plane designed in the Ukrainian SSR by the Antonov design bureau. Measured by maximum take-off weight, it was the largest aircraft ever built. The aircraft, designed to transport the Boeran - the Russian counterpart to the space shuttle - was an enlarged version of the successful Antonov An-124. Mriya (Мрія) is Ukrainian for "dream". During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the only operational An-225 was in a semi-open hangar at Hostomel Airport near Kiev. In a Russian bombing raid on February 24, the aircraft was damaged to the point that it was probably beyond repair. The Ukrainian government announced its intention to rebuild the aircraft.
