The Antonov An-225 "Mrija" was a cargo aircraft designed in the Ukrainian SSR by the Antonov design bureau. Measured by maximum takeoff weight, it was the largest aircraft ever built. The plane, designed to transport the Boeran - the Russian counterpart to the space shuttle - was an enlarged version of the successful Antonov An-124. Mrija is Ukrainian for "dream". During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the only operational An-225 was in a half-open hangar at Hostomel Airport near Kiev. In a Russian bombing raid on Feb. 24, the aircraft was damaged to the point where it is unlikely to be repairable. The Ukrainian government announced its intention to rebuild the aircraft.
