This painting was part of a cycle depicting the amorous adventures of Jupiter in various guises, which Correggio painted for the Duke of Mantua, Federico II Gonzaga, ca. 1530/32. Leda, the protagonist in the Berlin image, was the daughter of the king of Aetolia and married to the Spartan king Tyndareus. Correggio painted the most common of several versions of the ancient myth: Jupiter approached Leda on the banks of the river Eurota in the guise of a swan and seduced her. Leda and the swan are seen on the bank in front of a group of trees, to the left two amoretti with wind instruments and a boyish Cupid with his lyre.
Antonio da Correggio or Correggio for short and born Antonio Allegri (Correggio, circa August 1489 - March 5, 1534) was an Italian painter. His name Correggio is derived from his birthplace.
