Two children with bundles of wood on their backs laboriously make their way home. Coloured paint spots are arranged to represent clothes, shoes and sticks. The forest behind them is almost completely dissolved in a coloured shadow, apart from a detailed section of a tree trunk that emerges at the top right. The children behave wistfully lost. As in his other late works, Romako has given it an eerie atmosphere. Outlined in quick, purposeful movements and accentuated by bright light accents, the two figures appear thin and fragile. In this illustration of children, Romako revealed a high degree of accuracy, rich in contrast, that somehow also possesses a peculiar, inherent volatility. Romako managed to add psychologising touches that gave ordinary landscapes a deeper meaning.
Anton Faistauer (Sankt Martin bei Lofer, 14 February 1887 - Clohars-Carnoët, 13 February 1920) was an Austrian painter. He worked mainly in a post-impressionist style.
