Print from around 1900 showing fossils from the Jurassic Formation. The Jurassic is a period in geology (and a system in stratigraphy) that lasted from about 201.3 to 145.0 million years ago. The Jurassic is the second and middle period of the Mesozoic era. It follows the Triassic and is succeeded by the Cretaceous.
In the Jurassic, the break-up of the supercontinent Pangea was in full swing. The northern part of the Atlantic Ocean opened up. It was a warm period, which lacked ice sheets at the poles. Sea levels were quite high worldwide, especially at the beginning of the epoch. The Jurassic was (along with the subsequent Cretaceous) the heyday of dinosaurs, also the first birds emerged.
