Antique engraving from around 1900 showing a number of mantle animals. Mantids are a sub-tribe of vertebrates and live in the sea. Together with the skull lizards and vertebrates, they form one animal group. They look somewhat like sea anemones by attaching themselves with a foot to a rock. The animals are bag-shaped with a layer around it. While sea anemones have one opening, mantids have two openings where water flows in and out. Water is pumped through the body. They have a stomach, a heart and an intestine. There are up to nearly 3,000 species of tunicates that live in groups or alone.
