Etching with city view after Herman Saftleven.
The Catharijnepoort was from the Middle Ages one of the four main entrances by land to the city of Utrecht.[1] The city gate stood on the west side of the current city centre, where the Catharijnebaan and Vredenburg meet today.
The Catharijnepoort was then reached from outside the city via a drawable bridge (Catharijnebrug) over the defensive moat. Between 1621 and 1625 the Catharijnepoort was renewed after a design by Paulus Moreelse. Around 1845 the Catharijnepoort was demolished. The bridge connection remained until about 1970.
Anthony van der Haer was amateur-engraver, amateur-drawer, copyist, born on 1730-04-16 in Amsterdam and died on 1785-07-06 in Rotterdam and worked mostly in Rotterdam and Gouda.
