Etching with city view after Herman Saftleven.
The Tolsteegpoorten were one of the four entrances to the city of Utrecht by means of city gates from the Middle Ages onwards. The Tolsteegpoorten were located opposite each other on the spot where the Oudegracht flows south into the defensive canal, where the Tolsteegbarrier is today.
The Tolsteeg gates were almost identical in plan. From outside the city, the eastern or western Tolsteegpoort was reached by means of a stone bridge with a wooden movable section. Across the bridge, the front gate, which consisted of two round stone towers, and the main gate followed.
