The closing of the Iapetus ocean during the Devonian creates the Appalachian Mountains. From this moment, the erosion of this mountain range also starts. A lot of erosion material comes via the trade winds to the centre of what we now call the United States. A very or enormous sea of sand is formed, by analogy with the Sahara Desert. Increasing pressure (diagenesis) creates sandstone, better known as Navajo Sandstone. In this rock, a canyon is formed by erosion. As rainwater rapidly collects in pools upstream during monsoon seasons, the huge amount of rainwater along with sediment flows through the valley, creating mudslides. At the constrictions at the canyons, these further scour the canyon. In addition, the wind did its work. As a result, the soft rock types were worn down and the harder types polished.
