André Derain's The Dance is an ambitious and remarkably eclectic painting that combines references to multiple European and non-European sources. The highly saturated palette of primary colours (red, blue and yellow), with the addition of secondary green, is characteristic of Fauvism, a pictorial style associated with wild and uninhibited expression. In its attempt to synthesise a diverse collection of sources and references, The Dance testifies to the layered, hybrid approach modern artists took when trying to create artworks imbued with so-called primitive qualities.
André Derain (Chatou, France, 10 June 1880 - Garches, 8 September 1954) was a French painter and sculptor who was also active as a jewellery designer. The artist was friends with Matisse and De Vlaminck, and together the painters are considered the founders of fauvism.
