I remember the day I first entered a Dutch polder: no hills, lots of dark and stagnant water at street level. It felt dangerous and threatening but it was just ditches, canals and wide rivers. South Limburg, my homeland. Memories from my childhood when I went on weekend hikes with the scouts. We strolled along field roads, rolling hills, through meadows past graves and fast-flowing streams. The highest church in the Netherlands at Vijlen already looms on the horizon. To the left is the dark Elzetter forest. The late autumn summer is already showing its autumnal hues and mighty evening skies.
