Amsterdam canals during a winter evening with illuminated merchant's houses at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the Zeedijk. The narrow, gabled houses which line the canals stand tall and serene, their silhouettes reflected in the shimmering waters below. These historic buildings, some of which date back to the 17th century, once housed merchants and wealthy families, and their rich past is palpable in the very bricks and mortar.
