About ‘Amphitheatrum Flavium by night’ by Richard Driessen

The Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium), better known as the Colosseum, built in the 1st century AD in Rome, was the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire.
The Colosseum was built by the Flavian emperors. Construction started on the initiative of Emperor Vespasian and was financed from the war booty from the plundering of Jerusalem in 70. Construction began in the first years of Vespasian's rule, probably in 70-72. Possibly Jewish slaves worked on the huge amphitheatre, but there is no historical evidence for this. After its completion in 80, it was inaugurated by Emperor Titus, the eldest son of Emperor Vespasian. The games at the opening lasted 100 days. The poet Martialis dedicated a collection of 33 epigrams to it. Titus' successor and younger brother Domitian added another floor, in addition to a number of corridors and rooms under the arena, which are now visible. Info: Wikipedia
