Bald eagles live near large bodies of water in North America and Canada. Bald eagles have a specific preference for areas near large bodies of water such as seacoasts, estuaries, lakes, and rivers. In many areas, these birds can be found within 3 km of a water source. Although their specific habitat may vary from area to area, habitat selection depends largely on the availability of prey and tall trees and the level of human disturbance. They avoid recreational areas and they even stop feeding when their foraging area is disturbed by humans. Although food availability is important in habitat selection, American bald eagles will choose habitats farther from their foraging areas to avoid human interaction.
