About ‘Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, Vase with flowers in a window’
Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, Vase with flowers in a window, c. 1618 This painting depicting a motley bouquet of thirty varieties of flowers is a masterpiece by Ambrosius Bosschaert. He accurately depicted the flowers so that each one is easily recognisable. This painting thus provides an overview of the most beautiful flowers Bosschaert knew, including the tulip, which was still rare in Holland at the time. Bosschaert based his bouquet on separate studies he made during the year. This allowed him to compile a bouquet of flowers that in reality did not bloom at the same time.
