Throughout his career, Sisley was particularly drawn to river scenes, often focusing on images of river traffic. This painting shows the confluence of the Seine and Loing rivers, southeast of Paris near the village of Saint-Mammès, where Sisley had moved to in 1880. A series of boats is depicted, from the ship gliding past on the far right to the construction boat on the left, with scaffolding on board. On the left is the red lock keeper's shed, with blue roof, but in the middle the lock itself is barely visible. This painting is particularly striking for its brilliant ultramarine blue and the careful study of light effects on water.
Alfred Sisley (Paris, 30 October 1839 - Moret-sur-Loing, 29 January 1899) was a British Impressionist painter, who lived and worked largely in France.
