Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) was a French painter of academic classicism and one of the most important representatives of Salon painting in the 19th century. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1845. Cabanel specialised in historical, religious and mythological subjects, depicting idealised, often sensual figures in flawless technique. His most famous work is *The Birth of Venus* (1863), which is considered the epitome of academic painting. Cabanel was a favourite of Emperor Napoleon III and an influential teacher - many later artists emerged from his class. He was regarded as an opponent of the emerging avant-garde, particularly the Impressionists.
