lithograph after Jan Luyken, 1853 - 1855.
The ruse with the Breda peat barge is one of the most famous incidents of the Eighty Years' War. It led to the capture of Breda on 4 March 1590 and was not only a military but also a moral victory for the troops of Maurice of Nassau, the later Prince of Orange.
In February 1590, Maurice was approached by the captain Adriaen van Bergen from Leur. He had a plan to capture the city: as a bargee he regularly transported peat to Breda Castle, where Spanish troops were stationed. Because he came so often, his ship was not checked. This way he could smuggle an army into the castle. This is the idea of the Trojan Horse.
