Also known as Touwslagers op de vesten A rope-maker, line-turner, baander or zeeldraaer is a craftsman who processed yarn, formerly mostly made of hemp, into rope. Since the end of the 19th century, the profession has virtually died out. The rope maker did his work in the open air, covered or in a tent-like structure, on a rope yard or line yard: a sometimes 300-metre-long, narrow strip of ground over which many yarns supplied by a spinner, were shorn out (run out). The rope ended up in a 'pit', a still existing length measure for rope. Albert Baertsoen (Ghent, 9 January 1866 - 9 June 1922) was a Belgian painter, pastellist, graphic artist and etcher. He painted landscapes and especially townscapes (many of which were in Ghent, but also - during World War I - in London), but also made etchings and pencil drawings.
