I photographed this Akha woman in Thailand, a people who live in small villages in the mountains of Thailand. They came from China to Southeast Asia at the beginning of the 20th century. The civil wars in Burma and Laos in the last century resulted in a flow of Akha immigrants to Thailand. Some 80,000 Akha now live in the northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, where they form one of the largest mountain tribes.
The traditional clothing for Akha women are black shirts with embroidered cuffs and lapels, wide leggings around the calves, knee-length black skirts with a kind of traditional Akha embroidered sporran over them. A distinctive aspect of their costume is the Akha headdress worn by women, decorated with silver balls and coins.
