Aït Benhaddou is a fortified city, or ksar, along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. It is located in Souss-Massa-Draa on a hill along the river Ounila and is known for its kasbahs. With every rainstorm the buildings suffer damage. Most of the city's inhabitants now live in a more modern village on the other side of the river; however, eight families still live within the ksar. Aït Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and a number of famous films have been shot there. Including Gladiator, The Mummy, James Bond and episodes of the hit series Game of Thrones.
