Aeneas at Latinus, Ferdinand Bol, c. 1661 - c. 1664 oil on canvas, h 218cm × w 232cm This is a scene from Virgil's Aeneid, painted on commission by the Amsterdam Admiralty. Aeneas honours one of the four captains who fought each other in a rowing race. All four were rewarded, even the captain who threw his helmsman overboard for disobeying an order. In a poem on this painting, Vondel emphasised the importance of fortitude and generosity for good governance.
