Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl (1860-1933) was a Hungarian-Austrian painter of the late 19th and early 20th century, known for his symbolist and historicising works. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and won prizes early on for his monumental history paintings. His works are characterised by dramatic compositions, mythological and allegorical themes and a detailed, academic style. Around 1900, he moved to Rome, where he increasingly turned to Symbolism. Despite his great talent, he was largely forgotten in the shadow of artists such as Gustav Klimt.
