Abstract image of a sand dune in the desert. The photo was taken in northern Mauritania in Africa's largest desert, Sahara. For us desert lovers, this area is breathtaking. The landscape consists of seas of sand dunes, rock formations and plains that resemble a lunar landscape, where the earth is covered with thousands of stones.
Mauritania is an incredibly large country and is located in West Africa. It is about 25x the size of the Netherlands and consists mainly of desert.
We travelled around in a 4x4 in the Adrar region, in the north of the country. The capital of the region is Atar, the place we used as the base of our journey through the desert.
It is wonderful to walk through the sand dunes and feel like you are alone in the world. You feel tiny in an endless plain, where you hardly meet other people.
Diana and Ronnie like to travel to areas where few tourists come.
