Etching from 1727 - 1733
The Catharijnepoort was from the Middle Ages one of the four main entrances by land to the city of Utrecht.[1] The city gate stood on the west side of the present city centre, where the Catharijnebaan and Vredenburg meet today.
The Catharijnepoort was then reached from outside the city via a drawable bridge (Catharijnebrug) over the defensive moat. Between 1621 and 1625 the Catharijnepoort was renewed after a design by Paulus Moreelse. Around 1845 the Catharijnepoort was demolished. The bridge connection remained until about 1970.
Abraham Rademaker (Lisse, Holland, Netherlands 1676/'77 - Haarlem, 21 January 1735) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, printmaker and dealer. He produced mainly topographical drawings and painted landscapes.
