About the artwork

This impressive picture shows the red brick façade of an abandoned prison behind a barbed wire fence. The rigid, barred windows are reminiscent of the times when people were restricted in their freedom here. The ominously dark sky above the prison adds to the gloomy atmosphere and gives an idea of the stories of isolation and loneliness that these walls once harboured. The thick vegetation that now surrounds the site makes the traces of time visible as nature slowly begins to reclaim the prison.

The barbed wire in the foreground symbolises the former barrier that ensured that no one could escape. Now the prison is silent and deserted, a place where time seems to have stood still. The windows gaze fixedly and blankly at the dilapidated surroundings, while the building itself remains a silent witness to times gone by. It is a place that evokes both curiosity and trepidation.

Nature has begun to take control of this place of captivity. The once sharp boundaries of the barbed wire are slowly blurring in the tall grass that grows wildly around the building. The melancholic scenery encourages us to reflect on the lives of those who were once imprisoned here and why this place was finally abandoned. It is a lost place that conveys not only transience, but also a deep sense of isolation and remembrance of times gone by.
