A touch of chic abstraction: From fluff to abstract by Marjolijn van den Berg

"A touch of chic abstraction: From fluff to abstract" is a macro photograph of a dandelion fluff, set against a brown (including taupe and beige) and grey background. Water droplets hang from the fluff.

This work has a very distinctive atmosphere: on the one hand, a realistic depiction of a fluff with droplets; on the other, an abstract, almost painterly background. There is also a sense of depth in the work. This is because I chose a shallow depth of field when taking this photograph. As a result, only a small part of the photograph is in focus, and the further away (or closer) a part is, the more out of focus it becomes. (In this work, the focus is at the transition from the stems to the fluff with the droplets).
Among other things, this also creates the distinctive effect in the background. As it is further away, it becomes fainter and more abstract. In this piece, it almost looks like a painting.
The droplets also help to create this dreamy atmosphere; they reflect the light, causing sparkles to appear on them.

This photo was taken with a more extreme macro lens than is normally used. This magnifies the subject even further, allowing you to see elements you’ve probably never seen before: can you see, for example, the ‘tiny hooks’ attached to the hairs of the fluff? ‘The wonderful world of extreme macro photography’. The background of this piece, with its interplay of brown and grey tones and the patterns within, looks as though it is made of some kind of metal.

It would look wonderful, for example, as wall art in a waiting room, bedroom, hallway or simply above the sofa in the living room!
