In the early morning, shrouded in frost and silence, a lone tree stands in the winter field of the Mepper hay meadows, near Forestry Gees. The sky is heavy and dark, while on the horizon the first soft light of the rising sun breaks through. The icy frost covers the grass and catches the warm light, giving the landscape a serene, almost melancholic atmosphere. The dead tree, with its jagged branches, forms a powerful focal point in this quiet winter scene - a symbol of transience and tranquillity.
Boswachterij Gees lies in the southeast of Drenthe and borders the Mepperhooilanden, For centuries, these hayfields were used by farmers from the surrounding area, who harvested their hay here in the summer for their cattle. The traces of that traditional land use are still visible in the landscape. Today, the area is managed by the Forestry Commission, which restores the natural water balance and provides space for meadow birds, insects and special plants.
This photo captures the moment when cold, light and silence merge - a subdued ode to the winter beauty of the Drenthe landscape, where nature and history meet.
