A panorama of Asia’s great river

by Walter G. Allgöwer

Beneath the sheltering canopy of ancient trees, the Mekong flows with measured tranquillity through the landscape of Luang Prabang. There is no urgency in its course, no haste. The broad ribbon of water seems to slow down time itself, whilst gentle waves catch the afternoon light and carry it on in countless shimmering reflections.
On the opposite bank, wooded hills rise from the greenery, their slopes streaked with sun and shade. Hidden amongst the trees are houses and paths – small traces of human life that almost vanish into the vastness of nature. Boats glide silently across the river, as if following an ancient melody known only to the Mekong.
Here, one can sense why this river is far more than just a waterway. For centuries, it has connected peoples, stories and cultures, carrying memories from distant mountains to the plains of South-East Asia. Its current tells of departures and homecomings, of trade and encounters, of the quiet rhythms of life along its banks.
Against the peaceful backdrop of Luang Prabang, sky, water and forest merge into a single harmonious scene. If you pause for a moment and let your gaze wander across the river, you will discover a rare form of tranquillity: that deep serenity which only vast landscapes can bestow.
