A fifth generation fighter takes off from Leeuwarden Air Base: a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II of the Norwegian Air Force.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a multi mission fighter. This means that the aircraft can perform several tasks at the same time. The F-35 replaces in the Netherlands the F-16 which is in service since 1979 within the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The same applies to the Norwegian Air Force.
The F-35 is a so-called '5th generation fighter' with a more extensive sensor package than previous generations and stealth characteristics. This makes it less visible for (enemy) radar. The F-35 was in the past called JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) but is now called F-35 Lightning II.
