About "A drawing of a swimming wigeon"

by Bianca Wisseloo

About the artwork

A digital drawing of a wigeon swimming in the water. This is a male with his distinctive reddish-brown head with a light patch on the front. He looks at you with one eye and you can see the reflection of the duck in the water. The drawing is realistic but also sketchy. Sketch lines can be seen across the drawing, giving the image a loose feel. The water is frame-filling, so you only see the bird and the water.

The wigeon is a bird from the duckling family.
The wigeon is a medium-sized ground duck. The species breeds in northern Europe and Asia; in winter, they occur in large numbers as winter visitors along the coasts of western Europe, including Belgium and the Netherlands.
Males can be recognised by their orange-red head with a yellow forehead. Below the head, a section is salmon pink and towards the back the grey parts. The rear part is black. Wigeons have a relatively short, grey bill.
The sound of males is a high distinctive "piiew piiew" and of females "rarr". The distinctive call has earned them the nickname "velvet duck". At night, the distinctive call can be heard from specimens flying overhead.
They forage on grasslands in their thousands. They mainly eat grass, green plants and aquatic plants.
