The Elbe is a Central European river that has its source in the Czech Republic, flows through Germany and flows into the North Sea. Among other things, it drains a large part of eastern Germany and almost all of Bohemia, which is surrounded by low mountain ranges. The most famous waters in its catchment area include the Moldau, Mulde, Saale, Havel with the Spree and Elde with the Müritz. The upper reaches are characterised by the low mountain ranges, while the lower reaches follow two glacial valleys of the North German Plain.
The Elbe is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Krkonoše Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia (western half of the Czech Republic), then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 km (68 mi) northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 kilometres (680 mi)
