Every time I go to the Hortus in Leiden, I have to stop by the large collection of carnivorous plants. At the carnivorous Sundew I can amuse myself for hours. All those pretty droplets invite me to take a close-up of that. But the other species are also well worth seeing. See here a close-up of the Venus flytrap ((Dionaea Muscipula). The plant contains all kinds of stems (leaves) with small 'mouths', also called the closing trap. The scents of the leaf halves lure prey to feed on the plant. Insects land on the leaves due to the irresistible colours and scents. When the insect touches three hairs within 20 seconds, the trap snaps shut and the insect is digested. The insect's nutrients serve as food for the carnivorous plant.
