A Norwegian Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II takes off from Leeuwarden Air Base.
On July 7, 2006 the production version of the JSF was presented in Fort Worth. During the ceremony the final name was mentioned for the first time, the F-35 Lightning II. The aircraft is named after the Lockheed P-38 Lightning from the Second World War and after the English Electric Lightning, a British interceptor jet from the Cold War. Prior to this, competitions were held in the countries participating in the project to come up with a name for the aircraft. The final name was chosen.
