Drawing after Johannes Jelgerhuis
Flushing was severely hit by an English bombardment in August 1809. This was done from both sea and land. In addition to heavy mortars and ship's artillery, the English also used so-called congrave rockets. These were a kind of rocket or hollow ball that exploded above ground. The psychological effect of these projectiles was greater than their destructive power. Flushing fell on August 15.
