A Hermit Praying in the Ruins of a Roman Temple - Hubert Robert

by Accessible Art

An outstanding example of an architectural capriccio is this charming and evocative oil painting by French master Hubert Robert, known across Europe as the painter of ruins. The composition, which is housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection, juxtaposes a beautiful, narrative genre setting with the massive majesty of antiquity. Massive Corinthian columns and a towering coffered barrel vault overshadow the human presence below in the vast, disintegrating interior of an old Roman shrine.
In the middle, a recluse dressed in white kneels piously in front of a rustic stone altar decorated with a skull, an hourglass, an open religious book, and a crucifix, reflecting on spiritual devotion and the fleeting nature of human vanity. A young woman teases the unwary hermit by balancing on a ladder against a broken brick barrier and reaching down with a leafy bough, providing a lighthearted juxtaposition to this somber reverie. Peasant maidens pick flowers from a shrine nearby by slipping past a worn wooden barrier. In order to create an enduring meditation on the unstoppable passage of time and the vitality of youth amid fallen civilizations, Robert skillfully arranges dramatic chiaroscuro, allowing warm streams of daylight to illumine overgrown brickwork, drifting birds, and ancient columns.
