About ‘A Capriccio Harbour Scene in a Mediterranean Bay, Jacob De Heusch’
A Capriccio Harbour Scene in a Mediterranean Bay, Jacob De Heusch (1701)
Jacob de Heusch was primarily a landscape and seascape painter. He studied in Utrecht with his uncle, Willem de Heusch, and then moved to Rome in 1675, remaining there until 1695. There he became part of the Bentveughels, a confraternity of northern artists working in Rome. The present work represents a harbour scene in an imaginary setting, incorporating motifs from various Italian landscapes, that also appear recombined in some of his other paintings.
