It is cold and stormy.

The waves of the blue sea

are foaming with rage.

They crash with full force against the rocks.

It is becoming dangerous in the boats.

“Let the waves come,” say some, “the sea will calm itself down of its own accord.”

It’s getting dark; soon we’ll no longer be able to see the coast. “Let’s just go down; it’s no use anyway,” say others. “We’re scared,” think many, but few say it out loud. By now, it’s the dead of night.

If nothing changes now,

the boats will crash against the rocks

and sink.

Many are simply staring at the waves,

but some are gazing into the distance.

They spot a light on the horizon.

“Do not be afraid!”,

the lighthouse calls out to us.

We row with combined strength:

old, young, poor, rich, black, white.

With our eyes fixed on the light

we reach the shore together.

“I am with you”,

we say to one another.

Alone, none of us would have made it.
