About the artwork

"Cookies of their own dough" is a digital still life in which nostalgia and symbolism come together. The work shows a sleek, built-in cupboard between shiny white underground tiles, as you know them from old-fashioned kitchens or toilets. The cabinet consists of three symmetrical wooden shelves, on which a total of 12 identical, tin biscuit tins are located. Each metal drum is retro designed with in a yellow-brown colour, on which a name is printed with graceful, old-fashioned typography. Although the drums look visually the same, each one carries a unique print with a typical Dutch biscuit: "Kletskoppen", "Bitterkoekjes", "Weesper moppen", "Spritsen", and so on.

The apparent uniformity of the drums contrasts with the variety of designations, giving the artwork a subtle layering. The title "Cookies of your own dough" refers not only to the pastry itself, but also to the expression that stands for getting back what you deserve. In doing so, the work invites the viewer to reflect on personal and social consequences: everyone carries their own 'drum', filled with deeds, memories or judgements. The tight arrangement and clinical tiling reinforce this sense of systematics and control, while the biscuit drums evoke a playful warmth and recognisability.

The result is a seemingly simple still life that becomes rich in meaning through context, repetition and language. An ode to tradition, behaviour and responsibility - all wrapped up in something as mundane as a biscuit tin.
