Under a brilliant blue sky without clouds, a stylised image of Utrecht's Stadhuisbrug unfolds, where light and shadow subtly alternate. On the left is the monumental City Hall, bathed in warm sunlight that brings the sandstone facade to life with varied hues. The clean lines and simplified shapes emphasise its architectural elegance, while the windows appear closed in the bright daylight. On the right, the shops contrast, shrouded in deep shadows. The shop windows are barely visible, merely suggested with dark areas and soft contours, evoking a mysterious atmosphere.
Between these two worlds flows the Oudegracht, completely in darkness. The water is rendered as an inky black void, missing the reflections of light and the usual vibrancy of the canal. This shadow zone forms a silent gap between the illuminated City Hall and the shadowy shops, automatically leading the eye into the background. There, the Fish Market rises, modestly but brightly lit, with its quay and steps rendered in stylised planes. Above it all towers the Dom tower, characteristic Utrecht red against the blue sky.
The Dom tower almost seems to float above the city, a symbol of pride and recognition. The whole artwork exudes a balance between simplicity and detail, with a focus on colour contrasts and tessellation. It invites the viewer to not only see but feel the city of Utrecht through the tension between light and dark.
