The digital artwork "Smalspoor Houten" shows a summer still life in which a meandering bike path plays the main role. The path meanders elegantly through the landscape, automatically drawing the eye into its depths. The ground is smooth and light grey, with here and there a haze of fluttering blossom. On either side are Japanese cherry trees in full bloom; their branches form a graceful arch of pink and white flowers above the path. Loose petals gently float down, like a silent rain of colour.
To the left of the picture is a green wastebasket, half-hidden among the grass and low bushes. This small, functional object contrasts subtly with the natural exuberance of the flowering trees. To the right, in the foreground, a narrow tiled path branches off from the cycle path, an inviting side road leading to an invisible destination, possibly a house hidden behind the greenery.
To the right, just off the cycle path, is a blue sign with the icon of a cycle path-a clear, familiar sign marking the route. A little further on, deeper in the image, is a second cycle path sign, smaller due to perspective, but reinforcing in its repetition. These signs add a functional layer to the idyllic scene.
The summer sun bathes the scene in a warm, radiant light. Shadows from the flowering branches draw playful patterns on the ground. "Smalspoor Houten" captures a moment of tranquillity and movement, in a landscape where man and nature converge effortlessly.
