My name is Hilleke Scheper. I have been living in Buitenpost in Friesland (the Netherlands) – a lovely village – for 13 years now.
Even as a child, I was often busy with pencils and coloured pencils, and painting with gouache. Around 1957, every Saturday a biologist would be on the radio who could talk so beautifully about the flora and fauna. Those stories intrigued me so much that I could often be found by the ditches, catching newts and other creatures. It was a wonderful childhood.
At some point I started painting, first using the Hindelooper technique (1975) and then moving on to canvas(1977). I started with oil paint, but in 2013 I switched to acrylics.
Thanks to him, who told such beautiful stories, my paintings are based on nature – the shapes, lines and colours, especially flowers.
Everything that lives and grows never ceases to fascinate us!
It was the slogan of the biologist that I started using because that is exactly how I feel. I can enjoy nature, all the seasons in all their facets. I focus on what I see or think, then start painting without a fixed plan. Sometimes I have a rough idea, but it turns out differently anyway. My works are realistic, abstract, intuitive – I find it all wonderful to do.
My thoughts, your thoughts: ‘Look around you and see the colours of nature’.
