Birgit was born in Aruba, but began a nomadic existence with her expat family from the age of three. She grew up in countries such as Venezuela, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Middle East. She later continued her expat life as an adult, immersing herself in the cultures of Singapore, Cameroon, South Africa and again the Middle East.
From an early age, Birgit showed an exceptional talent and interest in art. After years of self-study, she received government-funded art training from various professional teachers from the age of 14. She obtained degrees in interior architecture and design, but her passion for painting and travelling continued to drive her. During her wanderings, she sold her works through art fairs, galleries and private collections.
Her art is deeply rooted in observations of her surroundings - the habits, behaviours, cultures and belief systems of the people around her. She is fascinated by the complexities and contradictions of human nature: the balance between cruelty and kindness, tradition and change. Through her experiences in highly censored and controlled societies, she has developed a subtle way of incorporating her observations and critiques into her work. She communicates through the language of colour, visual elements and symbolism, making her art aesthetic as well as layered and meaningful.
