A woman with red, flaming hair falls from the sky. A comet follows her like a tail, while stars twinkle in the sky.
Somehow, around the turn of the year, I often make a paper cutting of a woman flying, falling or jumping.
It also requires a leap into the unknown to start another new year, so perhaps it is for that reason that an illustration of this theme bubbles up with me around that time.
It symbolises boldness, energy and a connection to the cosmic. After all, we are all made of stardust and will return to it.
She also recalls icarus flying too high, but seems to have control over her flight through her posture. The comet almost seems to drive or accompany her aa.
The technique I used is collage. The image is composed of pieces of paper, something Matisse also did with his Icarus.
I don't know if I subconsciously stored those in my memory, but their pose is very different, the technique is the same though.
It fits into an interior where there is some fantasy.
My work distinguishes itself by strong colours and clear shapes. I work with ecoline, ink and pencil, but I also like to cut and paste.
I get my inspiration from nature and like to daydream. Animals and people sometimes seem to melt together in these reveries.
