Francis of Assisi (also Francis of Assisi or St. Francis; Italian: Francesco d'Assisi) (Assisi, 1181 or 1182 - Portiuncula, October 3, 1226), born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone, lived as a religious, founded the monastic order of Franciscans or Friars Minor, and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on July 16, 1228.
On October 4, Francis' body was carried in a procession through the city, to the church of San Giorgio in Assisi, where he was buried. In the same church, Pope Gregory IX pronounced his canonization two years later. At the pope's request, Elias of Cortona began the construction of the Basilica of St. Francis over his tomb.
The day on which the procession took place was chosen as his feast day. In 1929, St. Francis' day also became World Animal Day. As an additional feast, the 1962 Calendar of Saints also celebrates the Feast of the Stigmata of St. Francis on September 17.
