Until the summer the lantern plants (Physalis alkekengi) are rather inconspicuous. They have ovoid leaves and small, white to yellowish flowers. In the autumn, 5-7 cm long, lantern-like calyxes emerge from the flowers, which turn bright orange. Inside there are non-edible, orange fruits. From this species the low-growing variety 'Zwerg' has developed, which only grows to 20-30 cm. She looks very nice in tubs on the terrace.
