The Zuiderkerk is the first church designed for Protestant worship in Amsterdam. The church was built near the Sint Antoniesbreestraat in the Lastage, a neighborhood that was added to the city at the end of the 16th century. Today this is the Nieuwmarkt neighborhood. The Groenburgwal is an Amsterdam canal that connects the Raamgracht with the Amstel. The area between the Kloveniersburgwal and the Zwanenburgwal was still "the site outside the Amstel" until late in the 16th century. In 1593 the area was added to the city.
