About ‘Worn trainers on cold concrete’ by Frank Heinz

This minimalist still life captures the stark contrast between a personal, worn object and the cold, abstract surroundings. At the centre is a pair of old, brown suede trainers, their surface showing the marks of countless steps and experiences. The warm tones of the rusty brown leather and the dirty white accents stand in stark contrast to the cool, dark grey concrete surface on which they rest. The signs of wear on the shoes - the creases, the discolouration and the loosened laces - lend them a character of nostalgia and lived history.

The surroundings are architecturally austere and reduced. The background is formed by sharp, horizontal lines in shades of white and light grey, creating a modern, almost sterile atmosphere. This clear, cool geometry forms a stage for the organic, imperfect pair of shoes. The shallow depth of field draws full focus to the texture and details of the shoes while blurring the surroundings.
