Wine-Dark Cluster and a Tiny Purple Bud

by Skye Studio

A tight sphere of glossy, bead-like bulbils fills the centre of the frame, each one a deep wine-brown with a polished, almost metallic shimmer, as if dusted with fine glitter. Pointed tips curl at the ends of many of them, and a reddish glow shows through where the beads meet at the middle, with a few pale fibres caught between them. The whole cluster is a patchwork of shine and shadow, reflecting the warm light that falls across it.

This is the flower head of Allium macrostemon, a wild onion native to East Asia, which often forms bulbils in place of some of its flowers. Thin green stems curve through the picture, and at the lower left a small folded flower in soft violet hangs from one of them, the only bright note of colour, while a pale grey-green bud waits at the right. In the blur behind, a second dark cluster dissolves into cream and golden light, echoing the sharp one in front.

The mood is intimate and quietly strange, like discovering a hidden jewel in a wild corner of the countryside. The deep burgundy, buttery cream and fresh green make a rich, earthy palette that will appeal to anyone who loves macro photography, unusual plant forms and warm, natural colour.
